Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis of Indochina Mangrove Ecosystems

TDA-IME Project Final Report June, 2013 31 TABLE 8: Mangrove flora species at risk in Indochina and South Asia. Family Species Status Comments Rhizophoraceae Bruguiera hainesii Critically Endangered Very limited patchy distribution. It has been known to be previously present in South Asia, in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Singapore. However, current estimates of known individuals are only known from Singapore and Malaysia. Rhizophoraceae Ceriops decandra Near Threatened Restricted to the east coast of India and Bangladesh, southwestern Thailand and western part of the Malay Peninsula. Lythraceae Sonneratia griffithii Critically Endangered Very rare and patchily distributed, in India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Andaman Islands, northwest Sumatra, and southeast Bangladesh. Lythraceae Sonneratia ovata Near Threatened Increasingly rare at the extremities of its range from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Malvaceae Heritiera fomes Endangered Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand. Malvaceae Heritiera globosa Endangered Endemic to Borneo (West Kalimantan, Indonesia). It has a very limited and patchy distribution within its restricted range as it is only found in freshwater-dominated riverine areas. Malvaceae Brownlowia tersa Near Threatened Considered very rare in India. Bombacaceae Camptostemon philippinense Endangered Very rare and has a limited and patchy distribution in Indonesia and the Philippines. Myrsinaceae Aegiceras floridum Near Threatened Limited to high salinity areas in the Philippines, Indonesia Sabah (east Malaysia) and south Viet Nam. Plumbaginaceae Aegialitis rotundifolia Near Threatened Very restricted and patchy range in Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Thailand and in a single location in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Arecaceae Phoenix paludosa Near Threatened Occurs in India, Including the Andaman and Nicobar islands, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia (Sumatra), Thailand and Viet Nam. It possibly occurs in Myanmar. However, it is very patchily distributed and uncommon throughout its range. Others: Rhizophoraceae Kandelia candel Data deficient Patchy distribution in pioneer position at seaward or riverine edges in Brunei, Thailand and East Asia (southern China, Hong Kong and Japan) where subtropical temperatures favour cold-tolerant species. Rutaceae Merope angulata1 Near Threatened See footnote SOURCE: http://www.redlist.org - IUCN (2012): IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, Version 2012 (accessed 26.03.2013) and Polidoro et al. (2010); species status follows the IUCN criteria: the above species are at an elevated threat of extinction. 1 Example of a mangrove associate restricted to back-mangroves and river banks, in Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore where it is currently very rare. The salt-tolerant nature of this species implies that it may be potentially useful as root stock for citrus cultivation.
